As has been widely publicized in the media, the new CPR-AED guidelines were announced this week. The International Liason Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) reviews the standards every 5 years based on extensive clinical research.
The changes in the 2010 protocols are a substantial change over the guidelines of the last number of years. The introduction of “hands-only” CPR has also been introduced for the general public.
What does this mean to EMS? For now… nothing. We continue to apply the guidelines for which we were trained and certified. The new teaching materials will be available in the spring of 2011.
