Understanding the priority dispatch system

To follow up on the last post about the new priority dispatch system, here are the province-wide standards for ambulance providers. The origin of the call is listed in parentheses. ** indicates which calls CSL EMS responds to.

Priority 1 ** – Immediate life-threatening emergency (9-1-1)
Response: immediate and urgent

Priority 2 – Unstable patient (inter-hospital)
Response: immediate (< 30 minutes to receiving hospital)

Priority 3 ** – Potentially life-threatening emergency (9-1-1)
Response: immediate

Priority 4 – Risk of deterioration (9-1-1)
Response: <30 minutes (80%) and < 60 minutes (90%)

Priority 5 – Stable transfer (inter-hospital)
Response: <60 minutes to receiving hospital

Priority 6 – Stable patient with appointment (inter-hospital)
Response: depends on appointment time

Priority 7 – Stable patient (9-1-1)
Response: < 2 hours (80%) and < 3 hours (90%)

Priority 8 – Stable for non-urgent transfer (inter-hospital)
Response: < 12 hours
